Products made from plastic and nylon have brought many conveniences to human life, but the use of these products has been causing unpredictable consequences for human health and the ecological environment. Due to the convenience of plastic items, the amount of plastic waste generated is increasing. Single-use plastic pollution is becoming an urgent global problem and is considered the second biggest environmental challenge in the world after climate change. Vietnam is ranked 17th out of 109 countries with the highest level of plastic waste pollution in the world with the amount of plastic waste and plastic bags increasing and difficult to control.
This is also the situation in the dormitory campus at Viet Xo College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, students do not have the habit of classifying garbage and garbage appears in many places, affecting the beauty and causing damage to the environment. Environmental pollution. On the other hand, in the stage of garbage disposal, plastic waste is not only difficult to decompose but also has a bad effect on the surrounding environment.
Well aware of the importance of reducing plastic waste, the Youth Self-Management Team of the Dormitory has been making great efforts and taking drastic actions through many specific movements and models. One of the outstanding activities, bringing "dual" value, which is being enthusiastically responded by students in the dormitory, is to turn available materials into "Green Houses", collect waste, and contribute to keep the environment green, clean and beautiful.
The "green house" is designed with a height of 1.5m; 1m wide, surrounded by nets designed with a sturdy steel frame, corrugated iron roofs are suitable, compact, convenient for students to use and can be moved to store scraps without worrying about rain. wet, both during the day and at night, students collect recyclable waste such as plastic, metal, scrap paper, cans, soft drink bottles, paperboard, plastic bottles, ... and drop them into the "Green House"
With the model of "Green house" in the school dormitory, putting garbage in the right place has become a habit for students, and the dormitory campus is also more and more beautiful because there is a place to collect garbage without worrying. rain and sun. This model also has educational significance for students in sorting waste to protect the environment and helps students have a sense of saving in order to raise funds to carry out useful activities in the dormitory.
This is a practical job that not only contributes to youth in reducing plastic waste, protecting the environment
Mr. Mai Duc Trieu (Teacher of Dormitory Management), who came up with the idea and implemented the "Green House" model added: "The first thing after implementing the "Green house" model we realized is that students' awareness in protecting the surrounding environment, the ecological environment has been enhanced. The second one, it has also created a small fund used to implement small plans, partly to buy all kinds of products. biological waste bags, brooms for students in the dormitory to collect waste, creating motivation for them; The rest will raise funds to support disadvantaged students.”
From the sale of scraps from "Green House", the Self-Managed Youth Team purchased bio-waste bags to give to students to collect waste in their rooms before bringing it to the garbage collection area.
Every week on Friday afternoon, the members of the Self-managed Youth Team collect plastic bottles from the "Green House". Then sell, raise money
After more than 2 months of implementing the "Green House" waste collection model, with a source of funds from the sale of plastic bottles, the Dormitory Managers and the Self-Managed Youth Team bought bags of biological waste to distribute to students in the dormitory.
Ta Ngoc Tien (Room 208 Dormitory No. 2), said: “I find the implementation of this green house very useful, it doesn't sell for too much money but contributes to environmental protection from garbage collection. plastic and it also helps some poor students buy school supplies and clothes.”
Mr. Pham Duc Long (Teacher of Dormitory Management - Captain of TNTQ Team) shared: "Recently, when the "Green House" collected plastic waste was put into operation, I found it very meaningful to the school. The "green house" collecting plastic waste is not simply educating the awareness of preventing and combating plastic waste and protecting the environment, but it is from the "small, big meaning" of the model that will create a source of income. to help students with learning difficulties. Thereby, educating the children about thrift practice, anti-waste and the spirit of solidarity and love for each other. In the near future we will focus on promoting propaganda to raise awareness for students in dormitories and students in the whole school about the harmful effects of plastic waste and plastic bags on the environment and human health; the need to reduce plastic waste .”
It can be seen that the "Green House" model is a very effective way to encourage students to sort and collect plastic waste. Through the model, it has helped to form the awareness and habit of garbage classification and environmental protection among students. Currently, many students have formed interesting habits, such as: sorting garbage at home, keeping and cleaning plastic waste; use personal water bottles instead of single-use cups; Limit the use of single-use plastic products…
Tran Thi Tra My (Grade 7AK25) shared: “ After collecting plastic waste, I have a habit of always carrying a bag with me. Whenever I go to school or go out, I always pick up plastic waste when I see it. I find this plastic waste collection very interesting, both helping to protect the environment and making it possible for me to directly propagate to relatives and friends. I will actively participate in collection activities. Collecting and classifying used products made from plastic, packaging, and non-degradable plastic bags in schools as well as at home.".
It can be seen that the plastic waste collection model "Green house" has been actively contributing to the prevention and combat of plastic waste and environmental protection among students, teachers and staff of the school. clearly, expressed by specific actions, bringing many positive effects. Thereby, educating students to be aware of self-discipline and practical actions, say no to plastic waste, join hands to protect the environment.
Small actions, but great meanings will continue to spread to make life better by creating a green, clean, beautiful, and civilized society.
